What is Pan Card?

Pan Card means Permanent Account Number card, is a type of identity card issued by the Income Tax Department of India. Uses and importance of Pan Card.

Pan card is gradually used for tax related works. 

  • In order to fill income tax return pan card is required for that
  • Selling or purchasing any item worth more than 50,000 requires Pan Card
  • If you have to deposit or withdraw an amount more than 50,000 rupees from bank than you can do this transaction only if you have a valid Pan card.
  • To apply for a loan or credit card Pan card is mandatory for that.
  • Along this Pan Card is also used as an identity proof.

Who is eligible to apply for Pan Card?

Every Indian citizen having any source of income and required documents can apply for Pan Card. Person who is a tax payer or those persons who have to file income tax return has to apply for Pan Card and is mandatory for them.

What documents are required to apply for Pan Card?

Applying for Pan Card through official income tax web portal one must have
  • A valid adhaar card. 
  • A adhaar linked mobile number

What is Instant E-Pan card?

So well instant E-Pan Card is an electronic copy of Pan Card generated by Income Tax Department after applying for it through IT's official web portal. It holds same value and status as a physical Pan Card holds. This electronic copy is generated when you apply for Pan after doing adhaar based E-KYC. e-PAN facility is for allotment of Instant PAN (on near-real time basis) for those applicants who possess a valid Aadhaar number. PAN is issued in PDF format to applicants, which is free of cost.

Step 1 Visit official website 

To apply for Instant Pan Card visit Official Website of Income Tax Department CLICK HERE

Step 2 Click on Instant E-Pan

Scroll down and click Instant E-Pan card option.



This whole process is a Four stage process

  • Stage 1 Enter Aadhaar Number
  • Stage 2 OTP Validation
  • Stage 3 Validate Aadhaar Details
  • Stage 4 Select and Update Pan Details


Step 3 Click on Get new ePan 

On this dashboard you will see an option "Get a new ePan" just tap on that. 




Warning for those who possess a valid Pan card: 

As per provisions of Section 139A of Income Tax Act, 1961, a person should not possess more than one PAN and as per Section 272B(1) If a person fails to comply with the provisions of section 139A i.e. if a person possesses more than one PAN, it will attract a penalty of Rs. 10,000.

Step 4 Enter adhaar number.

On this page enter your 12 digit adhaar number and Click On Continue Button.

Before going ahead please confirm 
1. You have never been allotted Pan number before.
2. You are 18 years old as on application date.
3. Your date of birth is mentioned on adhaar.
4. You have adhaar linked mobile number for OTP verification.



Step 5 Enter OTP

At this step you will be asked for an adhaar OTP sent to your adhaar linked mobile number, enter the OTP and check the terms and conditions check box stating that I agree to validate my aadhaar details with UIDAI, then Click Continue Button.



If you don't have linked your mobile number with your aadhaar card then firstly link the number with aadhaar by visiting your nearest CSC center or aadhaar enrollment/update center.

Step 6 Verify Adhaar Details

After successfully verifying your adhaar number with OTP you will be shown your personal details based on adhaar card like Name, Parentage, Date of Birth, Address etc. 
Now enter your email ID which you want to link with pan Card then confirm that mail ID with OTP. And at last Click On Continue Button.




You have successfully applied for an Instant ePan. Now Copy The Reference Number provided to you for future operations like Pan status or Pan download services.

Part B How to Download e-Pan Card


1. Follow above first 2 steps

2. Then click on Check status download Pan option.

3. Now enter your 12 digit aadhaar number.
Enter OTP sent to your aadhar linked mobile number then click continue.

4. After successfull validation of aadhaar OTP you will see two options there View Pan Card and Download Pan Card.

5. Click on download Pan Card option. PDF copy of your instant E-Pan Card will start downloading and it will be saved in yours phones memory.
